Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that develops quickly and can involve breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, vomiting, a sudden drop in blood pressure, or collapse. It is a medical emergency treated with injectable epinephrine and emergency care.
An oral antihistamine is not a treatment for anaphylaxis. Anyone with these symptoms should call emergency services immediately rather than waiting to see whether a tablet helps.
