Angioedema is swelling in the deeper layers of skin and tissue. Unlike hives, it may feel tight or painful rather than itchy, and it commonly affects the face, lips, tongue, hands, or genitals.
Swelling that involves the tongue or throat, or that comes with trouble breathing or swallowing, is an emergency.
