A prescription written "as needed", often abbreviated PRN from the Latin pro re nata, means the medicine is intended for use when a particular symptom appears rather than at set times every day. The prescription still specifies a maximum amount and a minimum interval between doses.

The trigger matters as much as the number. If a label says as needed but does not say as needed for what, a pharmacist can clarify what the prescriber intended.
