The Beers Criteria is a periodically updated consensus list published by the American Geriatrics Society identifying medicines that frequently cause more harm than benefit in older adults. First-generation antihistamines appear on the list, largely because of anticholinergic effects, sedation, confusion, and fall risk.

Appearing on the list does not mean a medicine is banned or that anyone should stop it. It is a prompt for prescribers to consider whether an alternative exists and to monitor more closely if the medicine is still the right choice.
