Bioequivalence is the standard a generic product must meet to be approved. The manufacturer shows that the generic delivers the same active ingredient into the bloodstream at a rate and extent that fall within an accepted range compared with the reference product.

Inactive ingredients may differ between products, which is why a switch between manufacturers can change a tablet's colour, shape, or taste without changing the active ingredient.
