Diphenhydramine is a first-generation H1 antihistamine available without prescription, marketed as Benadryl and as the sedating component of many nighttime pain and sleep products. Like other first-generation agents it crosses into the brain and has anticholinergic activity.

Because it appears in so many combination products, it is a common source of accidental duplicate dosing.
