Excipients are the components of a medicine other than the active ingredient. They bind a tablet together, control how quickly it dissolves, add colour, preserve a liquid, or improve taste.

Although inactive in the therapeutic sense, excipients matter to people with specific allergies or intolerances, and they explain why generic versions of the same medicine can look and taste different. Full lists appear in the labeling for each specific product.
