An indication is a condition or symptom for which a medicine has been formally approved, based on evidence the manufacturer submitted and the FDA reviewed. Indications are listed near the top of prescribing information.

A use that is not listed is not necessarily inappropriate; it simply has not been through that formal approval route for that product. Prescribing outside the listed indications is legal and common and is called off-label use.
