Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions, largely carried out by liver enzymes, that convert a drug into other substances called metabolites. Metabolites are usually easier for the kidneys to excrete, and some retain activity of their own.
Metabolism explains many drug interactions and much of the variation between individuals in how a standard dose feels.
