Pruritus is the medical word for itch, the sensation that provokes scratching. It can arise from skin conditions such as eczema and hives, from systemic conditions involving the liver, kidneys, thyroid, or blood, from nerve problems, and from medicines themselves.
Because the causes are so varied, persistent itch without an obvious rash is generally worth evaluating rather than only suppressing.
