A rebound effect is the temporary return of a symptom, sometimes more intensely than before, after stopping a medicine that had been suppressing it. Rebound insomnia after stopping a sleep aid is a familiar example.
Rebound is not the same as withdrawal, although the two can feel similar and can overlap. A prescriber can advise on how to stop a medicine in a way that minimises both.
