Respiratory depression is breathing that becomes too slow or too shallow to maintain normal oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. It is a recognised danger when multiple central nervous system depressants are combined, particularly opioids with other sedating substances.
Slow, shallow, or noisy breathing in someone who cannot be roused is a medical emergency.
