Second-generation H1 antihistamines were developed to act on histamine receptors outside the brain while crossing the blood-brain barrier much less than older agents. Cetirizine, loratadine, and fexofenadine are common examples, widely available over the counter.

Less sedating does not mean never sedating. Labeling for some second-generation products still notes drowsiness in a minority of users.
