Strength is the amount of active ingredient per unit of the product, such as milligrams per tablet or milligrams per five millilitres of liquid. It is distinct from dose, which is the amount taken at one time.

When a pharmacy dispenses a different strength than before, the number of units per dose usually changes to keep the dose the same. Any change should be confirmed rather than assumed.
