Tolerance is a reduction in response to a substance after repeated exposure, so that the original amount produces less effect. It can develop to some effects of a drug and not to others; sedation, for example, may lessen while other effects persist.

Tolerance is not the same as addiction and is not the same as physical dependence, although the three often appear in the same conversation.
