Urinary retention is difficulty emptying the bladder, ranging from hesitancy and a weak stream to complete inability to pass urine. Medicines with anticholinergic activity can contribute, and the risk is higher in people with an enlarged prostate or existing bladder outlet obstruction.

Complete inability to urinate accompanied by lower abdominal pain is a medical emergency requiring same-day care.
